Health IT to receive $6.6M boost

The federal government has approved Maine's use of a $6.6 million grant to expand health information technology in the state.

In March, Maine learned it qualified for the stimulus funding, with a small portion available immediately and the rest contingent on the approval from the Office of the National Coordinator. The agency has approved Maine's implementation plan for improving the state's health IT system, allowing it full access to the funds over a four-year period, according to a press release from Gov. John Baldacci. In April, the governor created the Office of the State Coordinator for Health Information Technology, and HealthInfoNet, the state's electronic medical records exchange, received nearly $5 million to expand statewide.

Maine is only the sixth state in the country to have its plan approved by the agency, which is part of the federal Department of Health and Human Services.
