The New Hampshire Department of Transportation has submitted a $20 million application for federal funds to replace the deteriorating Memorial Bridge that connects Portsmouth, N.H., and Kittery.
N.H. DOT Project Manager Bob Landry told Foster's Daily Democrat the state hopes to tap funds from the federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery program to offset the estimated $90 million project. Landry told Seacoast Online the application includes nearly 140 letters voicing support for the project, including two from New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch and Gov. John Baldacci. A joint application filed by New Hampshire and Maine seeking $70 million in the first round of TIGER funds for the project was rejected in February. Maine did not join New Hampshire in filing this second application, though both states own the Memorial Bridge.
A two-state task force called the Maine-NH Connections Study has been developing recommendations for addressing the aging Memorial Bridge and the Sarah Mildred Long Bridge. Group spokeswoman Carol Morris told the news site the group's recommendations could be ready in September.
