HoltraChem owner threatens lawsuit

The owner of the former Holtrachem plant in Orrington has threatened to sue communities and businesses along the Penobscot River unless they agree to waive all future claims against the company.

At least six communities that operate sewer plants along the river and businesses that have a record of discharging mercury into the river last week received a notice from the Chicago-based law firm Sidley Austin LLP, acting on behalf of the firm Mallinckrodt LLC, according to the Bangor Daily News. Sidley obtained state information that tracks the river discharge of sewage treatment plants and businesses.

Mallinckrodt has already spent $35 million on the cleanup of the 235-acre Holtrachem site in Orrington. It is now evaluating how to clear the river of untold amounts of mercury-laden sediment that still remain, the paper reported.
