Home Depot: Data breach was through vendor

As many as 56 million debit and credit card numbers were stolen in a Home Depot data breach in September as a result of hackers breaking into a third-party vendor, the company revealed.

The Associated Press reported that Home Depot revealed new details surrounding the data breach on Thursday. First reported in early September, the breach resulted in the exposure of nearly 100,000 Maine debit and credit card numbers on an online black market, making it possibly the largest theft ever of consumer data in the state.

Home Depot said in addition to the 56 million debit and credit card numbers stolen in September, hackers also stole 53 million email addresses, but no other sensitive information. The company said hackers were able to install malware on self-checkout systems after accessing its network through a third-party vendor. The malware was used to steal debit and credit card information, similar to what happened in last year’s Target data breach.
