Home sales dip 5% in February

Maine real estate agents in February sold 5% fewer single-family homes over the same period last year, marking the first year-over-year decline in sales volume in months.

At the same time, the median sales price for Maine homes increased around 1% statewide, according to the Maine Real Estate Information System.

Bart Stevens, president of the Maine Association of Realtors, said in a press release Thursday that the decrease in sales volume was likely a result of harsh winter weather.

Stevens also said February saw unusually low inventory levels within certain price ranges. He said buyers are returning to the market this month.

In January, single-family home sales volume rose 21% over January 2012.
