House panel approves bill to let clammers dig near Acadia
The U.S. House Committee on Natural Resources unanimously approved a bill that let wormers and clammers dig near the Acadia National Park Shoreline, Maine Public reported on its website.
The bipartisan measure, sponsored by U.S. Reps. Bruce Poliquin, R-Maine District 2, and Chellie Pingree, D-Maine District 1, faces additional votes in the House and Senate.
“We received input from our wormers,” Poliquin said. “There are about 900 families that depend on the flats around Acadia National Park and other parts of our coast for blood and sand worms.”
Poliquin said the House bill also includes the ratification of the 2015 Schoodic Woods land transfer to the National Park Service and clarifies land acquisition policies at Acadia.
The House committee rejected a section of the bill that would have set aside some park land for a solid waste facility, Maine Public reported.
