Husson University is planning a $15 million expansion of its Bangor campus to accommodate growing enrollment.
The university yesterday announced the plan, a day after its board of trustees approved the expansion, which includes an $11 million living-and-learning building, according to the Bangor Daily News. The new building will include dormitory suites for 240 students, learning labs, classrooms and faculty offices, and is expected to be completed in August 2012. The plan also includes a $4 million renovation of its dining commons that will be completed this August. At a news conference, Vice President of Administration John Rubino said Husson spends $500,000 a year on rent and utilities to house about 100 students at nearby apartment complexes because of a shortage of on-campus housing. The school's enrollment has grown from 1,000 students in 1993 to 3,000 this academic year.
Work on both buildings is scheduled to begin in April, and will be paid for through room and board fees and fundraising efforts, according to the paper.
