Bangor-based Husson University has teamed up with Fitchburg State University in Massachusetts to offer two accelerated degree programs.

Under an agreement announced Monday, students at Fitchburg State will be able to complete their bachelor’s degrees in biology or chemistry along with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree at Husson, or their bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports along with a Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, on an accelerated schedule.

While freshmen at Fitchburg State, students will be able to enroll in the accelerated programs, for an undergraduate degree at that institution in three years. Those that qualify will then continue in a doctoral program at Husson, saving a full year of study and tuition.

“This collaboration underscores Fitchburg State’s commitment to creating opportunities for students, laying achievable academic paths toward rewarding careers,” said Fitchburg State President Richard S. Lapidus, in a news release. “We are grateful for the collaboration with Husson to open these doors for our students.”

Husson University President Robert A. Clark added, “This agreement is providing students with a clear trajectory for education beyond their bachelor’s degree ... Creating a seamless transition from a bachelor’s program at Fitchburg State to a doctoral program at Husson will save students both time and money.”

The move comes as construction continues on a new College of Business building at Husson set to open in fall 2021.

“It will certainly provide our cornerstone program in business with a state-of-the art facility,” Clark told Mainebiz in August.
