Husson University and the University of New England will collaborate on a plan to improve health care education and meet Maine's workforce needs for health care professionals.

UNE will offer professional, doctorate-level pharmacy education and Husson will improve its undergraduate pathways to health care careers, the schools said in a news release.

Husson recently ended its doctor of pharmacy program, but students will be able to transfer into the UNE School of Pharmacy.

“Demand for Pharm.D. programs has been in decline nationally for several years, but we recognize the critical role these programs have in ensuring qualified, board-certified pharmacists enter the workforce each year,” Lynne Coy-Ogan, Husson's president, and James Herbert, UNE’s president, said in a joint statement.

Husson and UNE will collaborate on their pre-pharmacy programs. They will provide qualified Husson and UNE undergraduates with access to apply to the UNE doctor of pharmacy program.

Husson students can also interview at UNE’s medical and dental schools. Students in the health and science programs can pursue UNE’s physician assistant program.

“At UNE, we are well aware of the shortage of health care professionals across Maine, and our students are learning and ultimately working in health care settings in every corner of the state,” said Herbert. “We are proud to collaborate with Husson on these new initiatives that, together, will provide more pathways for Maine students to pursue careers in health care and to alleviate the severe shortages the state is facing.”
