Commuters can expect a faster drive in major sections of the Interstate 95 toll highway between Kittery and Augusta, starting today.
The Associated Press reported that the Maine Turnpike Authority has increased the speed limits for two large stretches of I-95 — one between Kittery and Scarborough, and another between Falmouth and Augusta — from 65 mph to 70 mph.
As for smaller changes, the Falmouth Spur connecting I-95 and I-295 has increased from 50 mph to 60 mph, with the Scarborough-Falmouth section increasing from 55 mph to 60 mph.
The changes follow similar increases to sections of I-295 and other highways earlier this year, after Maine's transportation commissioner said a study showed "it's much safer if the [speed driven by most motorists] and the posted speed are the same."
