IGA in Milo set to close

The Milo Farmers Union's IGA will close next month following failed negotiations between the building owner and the store.

The 93-year-old grocery store, the town's oldest operating business, will close Feb. 11, and a new owner will open a supermarket at the site, according to the Bangor Daily News. The Milo Farmers Union, formed in 1917 as part of a national movement, has operated the grocery store in a building on Park Street without a lease since it expired in 1996. The building was then sold to Claude N. Trask Agency Inc., which sought to purchase the union's inventory, equipment and fixtures last year, an offer the union refused. In July, the Trask Agency served the union with an eviction notice, and the union attempted to buy the building in December for the asking price of $1.3 million, but the building had already been sold to Chuck Lawrence, owner of Tradewinds Supermarkets, for an undisclosed price.

Lawrence, who also owns Tradewinds stores in Blue Hill and Eddington, plans to open the new store after a month of renovations, according to the paper. He plans to retain as many of the former IGA employees as possible and add another 10 to 15 jobs.
