A Brewer-based labor group called Food AND Medicine, along with community leaders, yesterday announced the launch of the Eastern Maine Worker Rights Board.
According to a release, the board will "provide a community forum to legitimize workers' voices and to help remedy work place injustices," the Bangor Daily News reported. Food AND Medicine decided to form the new board in response to a 2009 poll it conducted in Bangor that showed 51% of employees felt they would be penalized for talking about unions at work, and 40% expressed interest in forming a union. The board will support workers who are forming unions through meetings, hearings and other manners, said Rep. Adam Goode, D-Bangor, a member of the board's steering committee.
The Bureau of Labor Education at the University of Maine also participated in yesterday's announcement.
