Investors end exclusive talks with Blethen

The investment group interested in buying Blethen Maine Newspapers has ended its exclusive negotiating rights with the publisher with no sale.

Maine Media Investment LLC -- made up former U.S. senator and defense secretary William S. Cohen, developers Robert Baldacci and Michael Liberty, and Richard Connor, a Bangor native who publishes a newspaper in Pennsylvania -- initiated the end of the deal, which it announced in July, allowing Blethen to talk with other interested buyers of the Portland Press Herald, Kennebec Journal in Augusta, Morning Sentinel in Waterville, and its other Maine properties.

Connor told the Portland Press Herald that Maine Media will continue to work toward a purchase. He said that negotiating the deal had ended up taking more time than expected.
