Jackson Lab gets $10M for disease research
The Jackson Laboratory has received $10 million from the family of a board member to launch a new center that will boost disease research.
The medical research lab announced Tuesday that the gift from board member David Roux and his wife, Barbara, will be used to launch the Roux Family Center for Genomics and Computational Biology at the lab's locations in Bar Harbor and Farmington, Conn.
The Roux Family Center will be provided with "three new faculty chair positions and a permanent fund for recruiting expert staff," according to Jackson Lab. The gift also will enable the lab's scientists to improve efforts in analyzing the human genome and discovering new ways of preventing and treating disease.
“At a time when public funding for disease research continues to dwindle, David and Barbara Roux have stepped forward to make a truly inspirational statement about the importance of supporting the future of genomic medicine in the shared quest to improve human health,” Jackson Lab President and CEO Edison T. Liu said in a prepared statement.
