Matt Jacobson yesterday officially announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination in Maine's gubernatorial race.
Jacobson, CEO of Portland-based Maine & Co., a nonprofit business attraction firm, made the announcement at the Ocean Gateway terminal in Portland. In his remarks, Jacobson said the state to needs to make a radical change in how it approaches economic development if it wants to be more competitive in a global economy. "My vision for Maine is simple," he said in a prepared statement. "We become world class. We do that by focusing our job growth on what we do best. And we confront, and overcome, the obstacles that are holding us back. We've had enough studies, task forces and commissions -- now we need to act."
Jacobson said other priorities include reducing the state's regulatory and tax burdens, working to lower energy costs for businesses and revamping Maine's educational system to more directly tie education programs with needed job skills, according to a press release.
Jacobson, a former Mainebiz columnist, created an exploratory committee in February.
