Jeff Sanders, president of the MaineHealth southern region who previously served as president of Maine Medical Center in Portland, will depart the organization later this summer.
“I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to serve the patients and care team members of Maine Medical Center and MaineHealth,” Sanders said in Thursday's announcement.
"As a Mainer with close connections to MMC, I am proud to support this community and the timing is right for my transition to pursue new opportunities," he added.
No details were immediately available as to the reason for Sanders' departure or where he is going.
Sanders is credited with leading a major expansion of Maine Medical Center’s Bramhall campus in Portland as well as helping to secure $179 million in private donations to support the project.
Maine Medical Center is the flagship hospital of MaineHealth, a not-for-profit integrated health system that tops a list of Maine's largest private employers in the 2023 Mainebiz Book of Lists.
Sanders has also led Maine Medical Center's efforts to integrate operations with Southern Maine Health Care in Biddeford and Sanford and to help guide Maine Med through the pandemic.
“I want to thank Jeff for his many contributions to MaineHealth’s mission and our vision of working together so our communities are the healthiest in America,” said Kelly Elkins, MaineHealth's chief operating officer. “Will we conduct a nationwide search to identify the right candidate to guide Maine Medical Center and Southern Maine Health Care, which together comprise the southern region of MaineHealth.”
Dr. Joel Botler, chief medical officer for the MaineHealth Southern Region, will serve as regional chief medical officer and as interim regional president until a permanent replacement is identified.
