Job training gets $500,000 boost

The Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership in Augusta is receiving $500,000 from federal labor officials to facilitate job training and placement services across New England.

MEP will use the funding from the U.S. Department of Labor to provide customized job training, employer outreach, mentoring and job placement services through its New England Mobile Outreach Skills Training Program, according to a press release from U.S. Sen. Olympia Snowe and the organization. The program is offered through a partnership with manufacturing extension programs in New Hampshire, Vermont and Massachusetts. MEP helps small and medium-sized manufacturers use advanced technologies and management procedures, and connects companies with employees and other sources of expertise.

Between October 2005 and August 2010, MEP helped clients create 665 jobs, save $39.5 million in operating expenses and retain $344 million in sales, according to the press release.
