Decision on Oxford casino pending

Voters statewide were narrowly split on a four-season resort casino in Oxford County, leaving the final decision in question this morning, while voters in Biddeford showed support for a racino in their community.

As of 1:45 a.m., casino supporters had a 1,400-vote lead with 81% of precincts reporting, according to the Sun Journal. Question 1 asked voters if they were in favor of a $165 million casino and resort in the town of Oxford, proposed by Black Bear Entertainment and backed by investors including Mount Abram ski area co-owner Robert Lally and former Barber Foods President Steve Barber. Black Bear says the casino would create more than 1,700 jobs and generate at least $60 million in revenue, according to the Portland Press Herald.

Meanwhile, voters in Biddeford favored a measure to allow Scarborough Downs to operate there, with 59% of voters approving the measure, according to the Press Herald. Scarborough Downs announced in August its intention to relocate to Biddeford, and has partnered with New Hampshire-based hotel developer Ocean Properties to pursue the proposal. The measure won 4,636-3,244, but still needs a change in state law and an exemption if the Oxford casino passes, according to the paper.
