Jobless rate hits 18-year high

Maine's unemployment rate reached 8% in February, the highest it's been since the early 1990s.

The unemployment increased to 8% from 7.7% in January and 4.9% for February 2008, according to preliminary seasonally-adjusted numbers from the Maine Department of Labor. The last time Maine's unemployment rate reached that level was in 1991. Maine lost a net 2,600 nonfarm wage and salary jobs between January and February, with the most substantial losses in government, retail trade, health care and social assistance, and construction, according to the labor department.

The national unemployment rate was 8.1% in February, up from 7.6% in January and 4.8% in February 2008.
