John Pulsifer, the man who became a Maine marketing icon as Jolly John, announced today he is selling his car dealership in Saco.
The Jolly John Chrysler Dodge Jeep dealership on Route 1 is now owned by Bill Waldron, owner of Portland Volvo and Portland Saab in Scarborough, according to a press release from Jolly John. Waldron can begin operating the dealership Wednesday using the Jolly John name until the franchise transfer approval is authorized and the sale closes before the end of the year. The price was not disclosed.
New products planned for Chrysler -- which in 2009 partnered with Italian automaker Fiat and sold most of its assets to a new company called Chrysler Group LLC -- compelled Waldron to pursue expansion into the franchise. Pulsifer said in the release that Waldron had "a great offer and the timing was right for me to make a career change," though he declined to specify what those future plans are.
Pulsifer has been known in Maine for nearly 30 years for his advertising tagline, "I'm not Jolly unless you're happy!"
