The federal American Recovery and Reinvestment Act pumped nearly $1 billion into Maine, according to state figures released recently.
State agencies spent $984 million in stimulus funds through June 20, with $640 million spent through entitlement programs like Medicaid and unemployment insurance extensions, the Kennebec Journal reported. Nearly $100 million was doled out in competitive grants, while many employees received the Making Work Pay tax credit of up to $400 for individuals or $800 for couples, which came through a reduction of paycheck withholdings during 2009.
In related news, the Obama administration last week announced that $100 billion had been invested in innovative technologies in the health care, energy and transportation industries, according to The Associated Press. The 50-page report said the funds would help the country meet renewable energy generation and manufacturing goals, boost the nation's health information technology adoption and create high-speed rail networks, among other initiatives. But critics expressed doubt that the one-time funding would succeed in sustaining long-term changes, according to The AP.
