Mister Bagel founder dies

The founder of the Mister Bagel franchise who opened the first bagel shop in Maine died yesterday.

Eric "Rick" Hartglass, 64, of Portland died last night at Maine Medical Center after a brief illness, according to news station WGME. Hartglass opened his first Mister Bagel eatery in 1977 on Forest Avenue and eventually added 11 more franchises in southern Maine.

According to his obituary and the company's website, Hartglass grew up in Brooklyn, and wanted to bring the bagel, common in New York, to Maine. He lived in Portland for the past 42 years with his wife, Gail.
