The Public Market House on Congress Street has been selected to be the city's first participant in a retail experiment called a "joycott," the opposite of a boycott.
The organizers of Portland Greendrinks -- a social networking event for environmentalists and beer drinkers -- developed the idea of launching a joycott as a way to fuse economic stimulation with environmental prerogatives, according to organizer Sean Sullivan.
"This is a fun way to show that environmentalism and capitalism can work together to effect positive change," he writes in a release.
The joycott works by encouraging locals to patronize a single business on a single day, and in return, the business pledges to reinvest a percentage of that day's profits into environmental upgrades. After approaching several markets, Sullivan says the Public Market pledged the highest amount -- 51%.
Examples of environmental improvements can include more efficient lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, or hand dryers and lighting motion sensors in bathrooms.
The event will take place Feb. 12 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the market at 28 Monument Square in Portland. The market has seven food and drink vendors: Kamasouptra, Peanut Butter Jelly Time, Pie in the Sky Pizza, Market House Coffee, Big Sky Bread Co., Maine Beer and Beverage Co., and K.Horton Specialty Foods.
