Jury says logger stole timber

A jury yesterday said a Skowhegan logger stole timber worth nearly $280,000 from Maine landowners, according to the Kennebec Journal.

Gerald Nelson stole timber from landowners in Augusta, Fairfield, Newport and five other central Maine towns from July 2000 to January 2003, a jury in Kennebec County Superior Court determined, the paper said. Nelson also was convicted of purposefully overcharging the Sappi Fine Paper Mill in Skowhegan for timber hauling services from November 2000 to March 2001, the paper reported.

Nelson is free on bail and will have a sentencing hearing at a later date, the paper said.
