The Kennebec Journal in Augusta will seek new offices following the sale of its 53,000-square-foot building to a mental health counseling agency.
MaineToday Media, owner of the daily paper, sold the building and its 5.28-acre parcel on Western Avenue to Crisis & Counseling for an undisclosed amount, according to the paper. Lynn Duby, CEO of Crisis & Counseling, told the paper the agency paid less than the property's assessed value of $3.3 million. The newspaper is hoping to move to a smaller location in Maine's capital by the beginning of March, and some computer functions and a few employees will relocate to its sister publication, the Morning Sentinel in Waterville.
MaineToday Media is downsizing its Augusta office because it consolidated print operations at its South Portland facility. The company sold its Portland Press Herald headquarters earlier this year, shifting some employees to South Portland and leasing Portland office space for others.
