Kittery shipyard work gets another $16M

In a third round of funding, the U.S. Navy plans to direct nearly $16 million to modernization work at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in Kittery.

The Navy has informed the Senate Appropriations Committee that $15.8 million will fund repairs and energy conservation work to the Removable Submarine Covers building, according to a press release from U.S. Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine, and Jeanne Shaheen and Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire. The project will restore and modernize the facility's structural integrity, as well as HVAC units and electrical and lighting systems.

The notification is the third modernization project for the shipyard announced in the last month, bringing the total modernization funding to $92 million. Contract awards were previously announced for renovations of buildings 174 and 178.
