USDA awards $180K for renewable energy work

The Greater Portland Council of Governments and the Maine Community College System are receiving grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture for renewable energy projects. The two organizations are among 10 around the country that received funding to help rural small businesses and agricultural producers reduce their energy consumption.

GPCOG will receive an $80,000 grant to develop on- and offshore wind projects, according to a press release from USDA Rural Development. In addition, Kennebec Valley Community College has been selected to receive a $100,000 grant to provide four energy audits as well as renewable energy development assistance for 140 agricultural producers and rural small businesses across the state.

The funding comes from the Rural Energy for America Program, which was authorized by the 2008 Farm Bill. REAP loan guarantees and grants can be used for renewable energy systems and energy efficiency improvements, feasibility studies, renewable energy development assistance and energy audits.
