Knight-Celotex reopens at half strength

Knight-Celotex, a specialty fiberboard manufacturer, will reopen its facility in Lisbon Falls on Sept. 2, but with less than half its previous workforce.

Plant officials told the Sun Journal that they will call back only 40 of the facility's previous 84 employees put out of work when the plant closed on August 1. The company plans to focus on a single product line -- a fiberboard used primarily in road construction -- to reduce its production and energy costs. The company will call back employees based on their skills and seniority, and state, federal and local agencies will provide assistance to those laid off, according to the paper.

Knight-Celotex, which is based in Chicago, had been Lisbon Fall's third largest employer.
