Knox County picks new airline

Knox County Regional Airport in Owl's Head may be getting a new airline for its service to Boston starting November 1.

County commissioners yesterday voted 3-0 to endorse a two-year bid from Hyannis, Mass.-based Cape Air rather than extend a contract with its current airline Colgan Air, according to the Bangor Daily News. The decision to choose Cape Air stemmed from Colgan's plan to upgrade from a 19-passenger aircraft to a 30-passenger aircraft, which would have required the airport to upgrade its facilities, including building a fire station, buying a fire truck and hiring firefighters. While the U.S. Department of Transportation would have reimbursed the town through Colgan for the new facility, commissioners said investing in airport infrastructure right now was too big a risk, the paper reported.

Cape Air also will offer lower one-way fares to Boston of from $59 to $129, compared with Colgan Air's fares of $150 to $344, according to the Courier-Gazette in Camden. The U.S. DOT must approve the contract.
