Land buy grows Aroostook park

Aroostook State Park will grow by more than 140 acres, thanks to a $115,000 land purchase.

The Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands purchased a 145.6-acre parcel adjacent to the park outside of Presque Isle using $60,000 in state money and a $55,000 donation of value from its owner, Nancy Askin of Massachusetts, according to a press release from the Maine Department of Conservation. The state funds came from the Land for Maine's Future and federal Recreation Trails programs. The purchase will increase size of the 904-acre park by 25% and will add more trails for hiking and cross-country skiing, as well as additional hunting land.

The park, one of 12 state parks with campgrounds, had 9,668 visitors in 2010 as of August, and saw a 23% increase in the number of overnight camping visits compared with 2009, with a total of 3,438 visits this year.
