Lawmakers consider unemployment controversy probe

State lawmakers this morning are considering whether to begin an investigation into allegations that Gov. Paul LePage pressured unemployment appeals hearing officers during a private meeting.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the Legislature's Government Oversight Committee was scheduled to consider a probe into the matter this morning.

That committee previously was responsible for audits into the Maine Turnpike Authority and Maine Housing Authority that looked into allegations of financial malfeasance at the agencies.

LePage has denied the allegations that he applied undue pressure on the unemployment appeals hearing officers and has separately commissioned his own panel to investigate reforms in the state's unemployment compensation program, which he has said is broken.
