Lawmakers kill Oxford County casino bill

Lawmakers yesterday killed a bill that would allow a casino in Oxford County.

The House voted 90-55 and the Senate, 27-7, to kill LD 1329. The bill was a revised version of the proposal that was defeated in last year's citizen referendum vote. Supporters said it would bring needed economic activity to western Maine. However, the bill's opponents said it wouldn't be right to approve a bill so recently defeated in a statewide vote, according to Maine Public Broadcasting Network. "For the Legislature now to circumvent the referendum that was defeated by the people, and to not afford the same consideration to our Native American neighbors and to my county of Washington would be patently unfair," Sen. Kevin Raye (R-Perry) told MPBN.

The Legislature's Legal and Veterans Affairs Committee will review the state's casino and gambling policies in January.
