Dr. Lisa Letourneau, the founder and executive director of the nonprofit Maine Quality Counts, has announced that she will be stepping down from her post by the end of this year.
Letourneau, a 2012 Mainebiz Women to Watch honoree, has led Maine Quality Counts for the last 10 years, building the organization from a small, informal group to a team of more than 30 employees in a $6 million nonprofit that is leading, collaborating and aligning a variety of initiatives to improve health care in Maine.
In a Jan. 6 letter to Maine Quality Counts’ members and stakeholders, Letourneau wrote that she is planning to step down as the organization’s executive director by the year’s end.
“Now that Maine Quality Counts is well established and organizationally and financially strong, the time is right to bring in a new executive director who brings new perspectives and strong skills in leading an organization of the size, scope and complexity of our current organization,” she wrote. “I am announcing my plans now in order to provide the Maine Quality Counts board with sufficient time to conduct a search and to support a thoughtful transition of my role to a new leader.”
Letourneau said the nonprofit’s board will convene a search committee to begin a national search to find her replacement.
“The time is also right for me personally,” she wrote. “My husband and I plan to take a year off in 2017 to fulfill our dreams of traveling and sharing adventures together. We then look forward to pursuing whatever our next career opportunities may arise following our year off.”
Among Maine Quality Counts’ initiatives is the “Choosing Wisely” campaign that encourages patients and their physicians to engage “in conversations about the overuse of tests and procedures and supports efforts to help patients make smart and effective care choices.”
