LePage inaugurated as governor

Lewiston native and former Waterville mayor Paul LePage yesterday was sworn in as Maine's governor.

LePage, 62, became the state's first Republican governor in 16 years before a crowd of more than 4,000 at the Augusta Civic Center. In his inaugural address, the former general manager of the Marden's retail store chain stressed the importance of streamlining regulatory processes for Maine businesses and reducing the cost of doing business in the state, including health care, workers' compensation and utility costs, according to MaineToday Media. He also spoke about reducing the size of state government, training workers for industries with the most opportunities in the state and reforming the state's welfare system.

With Republican majorities in both the House and the Senate, Maine's legislative and executive branches are under GOP control for the first time since the 1960s.
