LePage names labor, IF&W directors

Gov. Paul LePage has nominated two people to serve as heads of labor and wildlife, and is considering his senior policy adviser for the top education post.

LePage nominated Cheryl Russell, owner and president of Competitive Edge Consulting in Lincoln, as commissioner of the Department of Labor, according to the Bangor Daily News. Russell is the former executive director of Husson University's Richard E. Dyke Center for Family Business and the American Loggers Council, and previously worked for her family's logging business, Hannington Bros. Nominated for commissioner of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife was former Republican gubernatorial candidate Chandler Woodcock, who lost to former Gov. John Baldacci in 2006. He was an English teacher for 27 years and is executive director of the Maine Harness Horsemen's Association.

Meanwhile, Stephen Bowen is "under consideration" to lead the Department of Education, Robert Kautz, executive director of the Maine Coalition for Excellence in Education, told the Kennebec Journal. Bowen did not confirm he's the governor's top choice, but said LePage had mentioned a candidate to the State Board of Education for consideration. Bowen previously directed the Maine Heritage Policy Center's Center for Education Excellence, and has worked as a teacher and served as a state representative.

In related news, the Senate confirmed David Bernhardt as commissioner of the Department of Transportation, according to MaineToday Media.
