LePage nominates Rier as education chief

Gov. Paul LePage plans to nominate Jim Rier, the acting head of the Maine Department of Education, as the department’s permanent leader.

LePage announced the nomination Monday in a letter asking the State Board of Education to assess Rier’s qualifications for the position. LePage said the state board is expected to interview Rier during an executive session meeting Jan. 15, delivering a report to the governor within 10 days, before a formal nomination would be put before the Legislature.

Prior to his appointment as acting commissioner, Rier was a deputy commissioner for the department under Stephen Bowen, who resigned in September 2013. Before coming to the department, Rier was a senior project engineer at Buick and had served as president of the Machias-based Rier Motors Co., which was founded by his father. His past experience also includes service on the board of directors for Bangor Hydro Electric Co., the Maine Community Foundation, the Regional Medical Center at Lubec and the Washington County Education and Economic Development Alliance.
