LePage seeks permanent aircraft tax exemption

Gov. Paul LePage's administration hopes to make permanent a sales tax exemption on airplanes and airplane parts that is set to expire in 2015.

The Portland Press Herald reported that the administration confirmed this week submitting a bill to permanently eliminate the 5% tax on repairs and replacement parts for aircraft that was in place prior to July 1, 2011.

The Legislature's nonpartison Office of Fiscal and Program Review estimated that exemption will cost the state $608,000 in annual tax revenue, a total of $2.5 million through 2015.

George Gervais, commissioner of the state's Department of Economic and Community Development, told the paper that the sales taxes previously in place impeded growth in the state's aviation industry.
