Nordstrom Rack headed to S. Portland

Nordstrom Rack, a discount offshoot of Nordstrom department stores, plans to open a new location in South Portland this spring.

The move is parent Nordstrom Inc.'s first into Maine.

The clothier plans to join Target, Bed Bath & Beyond and other national chains at the Maine Crossing Shopping Center in a 30,000-square-foot space managed by New England Development, according to a press release.

The national chain is the third in recent weeks to announce a debut in Maine. The Bon-Ton Stores Inc. announced in December that it will open a 128,000-square-foot store at the Maine Mall late next year.

The Massachusetts-based grocery chain Market Basket also plans an expansion to Maine in 2013.
