Two Maine-based health care organizations have joined a regional purchasing coalition aimed at lowering costs.
Brewer-based Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems and Portland-based MaineHealth are two of 28 health care systems in New England to form the Northeast Purchasing Coalition LLC, according to a press release from EMHS. The organizations will work together to reduce non-salary expenses through aggregating purchasing and will share recommendations on product utilization. A committee of supply executives from the member organizations will operate the purchasing coalition and develop procedures to meet savings goals, with EMHS Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Dan Coffey serving as chairman. The coalition will use supply chain management services provided through national health care network VHA Inc. and local affiliates, VHA New England and VHA Northeast. VHA supply networks generally save members between 8% and 12% a year, according to the release.
The Northeast coalition represents nearly 17,000 beds, 5,000 physicians and more than $2 billion in combined annual non-salary expenses.
