LePage to officially announce bid for re-election

Gov. Paul LePage is expected to formally announce his re-election bid tonight during an event at the Buker Community Center in Augusta.

The Associated Press reported the event is scheduled to include remarks from a Democratic voter who plans to support the governor in this election and from Rick Bennett, chairman of the Maine Republican Party.

The event comes a day after challenger and Democratic U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud announced he is gay, which he said came in response to a “whisper campaign” about his sexuality from political opponents.

LePage is expected to face off for a second time against independent candidate Eliot Cutler, who lost narrowly to LePage in a 2010 bid for the governorship.
