Gov. Paul LePage issued 21 new vetoes on Monday, including a bill to raise the state's minimum wage. Lawmakers will convene today to consider those vetoes and possibly vote to override them as they look to wrap up this legislative session.
The Bangor Daily News reported LePage's Monday vetoes also include a bill that would require the state to buy goods or services from American companies when possible, a bill that would have spread the expense of charter schools throughout the state and a bill to place restrictions on foreign loggers working in Maine, among others.
The minimum wage bill would have raised the state's minimum hourly wage to $9 by 2016, increasing from $7.50 by 50 cents annually starting in 2014.
LePage also vetoed bills that would create guidelines for small farmers to sell raw milk and to create a council to support science, technology, engineering and math education programs in the state.
The minimum wage veto is unlikely to face a challenge in the Legislature, which would need a two-thirds majority to override it. The bill passed by an 86-58 margin in the House and a 19-16 margin in the Senate earlier this year.
