Community Credit Union, a Lewiston-based credit union with branches in Auburn and Turner, will expand into three more counties after getting a green light from Maine's financial regulator.
The institution, currently open to those who live, work or worship in Androscoggin County as well as their families and organizations, requested permission to change its bylaws and expand its field of membership to Franklin, Kennebec and Oxford counties.
After reviewing the documentation submitted with the request, the Maine Bureau of Financial Institutions approved the request in late July.
In examining the request, the regulator considered rural district guidelines established by the National Credit Union Administration. The NCUA is an independent federal agency that insures deposits at federally insured credit unions, protects the members who own credit unions, and charters and regulates federal credit unions.
Community Credit Union's field of membership now includes those who live, work or worship in Androscoggin, Franklin, Kennebec and Oxford counties, including members of their immediate families or household members.
In other recent industry news, Portland-based cPort Credit Union plans to open a branch in Lewiston next summer, occupying a new building to be constructed on the site of a former Dunkin' Donuts.
Based on total assets as of Sept. 30, 2032, cPort Credit Union is ranked No. 9 in the 2024 Mainebiz Book of Lists. Community Credit Union is not on the list of Maine's 28 largest credit unions.
