Entrepreneur Linda Bean continues to expand her seafood business, most recently with the purchase of a wharf in Vinalhaven from Inland Seafood Co.
Bean, the granddaughter of L.L.Bean founder Leon Leonwood Bean, bought the wharf for an undisclosed price and renamed it the Americanus wharf, after the Latin name for the Maine lobster species, homarus americanus, according to the Herald Gazette. Bean now owns two wharves in Vinalhaven, and a total of five lobster-buying sites in Knox County. Bill Demmond, COO of the Atlanta-based Inland Seafood, said the sale of the wharf allows the company to focus more on processing. The company buys seven to nine million pounds of Maine lobster a year and owns a lobster processing facility in Portland. Through the real estate deal, Bean agreed to preserve a percentage of lobsters caught at Vinalhaven for Inland Seafood for a set margin over her cost, according to the paper.
Bean's business, Linda Bean's Perfect Maine, also includes lobster restaurants and cafes across the East Coast and in the U.S. Virgin Islands. In September, she bought a 7,600-square-foot building in downtown Freeport that will house a new seafood restaurant.
