L.L.Bean plans more cuts

Freeport retailer L.L.Bean plans to cut between 200 and 240 jobs in Maine over the next several weeks, according to a company memo sent to employees Friday.

Both salaried and hourly workers will be cut in all areas of the company, with affected employees to be notified starting by the end of this week, according to the memo. Some employees will be able to move from full to part time. L.L.Bean cited low retail sales so far in 2009 as the reason for the layoffs.

In February, the company began offering early retirement for qualified workers to reduce the number of layoffs. Earlier this month, the company announced plans to furlough 150 of its 200 workers at its call center in Bangor due to slow sales.
