Lobster Festival failed to pay sales tax for years
The organizer of the Maine Lobster Festival in Rockland corrected a decades-long mistake earlier this year: failing to pay the state sales taxes for years because of an incorrect assumption.
The Bangor Daily News reported that the festival’s organizer, Rockland Festival Corp., recently revealed that it repaid the state more than $73,000 earlier this year after its new accountant realized that the organizer incorrectly assumed that it wasn’t liable for sales tax as a nonprofit.
The amount paid by Rockland Festival Corp. represents three years worth of back sales tax and interest and was part of an agreement with the Maine Bureau of Revenue Services. The newspaper said the nonprofit never collected sales tax in its 68 years of operating until this year.
