Medway graphic design and marketing firm DesignLab is receiving $3,500 in professional services as part of winning first place in the Katahdin Business Plan Challenge.
The Maine Small Business Development Centers announced Monday that DesignLab and Allagash Tails, a business owned by Millinocket author Tim Caverly, won first and second place, respectively, in the contest. SBDC sponsored the contest to promote sustainable business growth in the Katahdin Region, which has been hit hard by mill closures in the past few years.
DesignLab won first place after being selected by an independent panel of judges, including representatives from the U.S. Small Business Administration, Eastern Maine Development Corp., New Ventures Maine and MaineStream Finance.
SBDC said DesignLab is in the process of moving from Medway into a historic three-story building in downtown Millinocket. The marketing firm plans to use the $3,500 in professional services to develop a scalable accounting infrastructure that it said will manage and facilitate business growth.
“The contest was very well designed in that it forced businesses to carefully examine their business model and ultimately, their role in economic development in the Katahdin area,” Jessica Masse, co-owner of Designlab, said in a statement. “The grant application process has already helped our business and we look forward to using our winnings to help Designlab grow.”
Allagash Tails is receiving $2,500 in professional services, which it will use for copy editing and illustration work, among other things. Besides publishing books written by Caverly, the company’s owner, the company also provides adult and children’s programs that encourage literacy and exploration of New England’s “natural world.”
