Retail sales up in February

Retail sales in Maine rose more than 2% in February, boosted in part by strong auto/transportation sales.

Total taxable retail sales in February were $1.03 billion, a 2.6% rise over February 2010, according to the Maine State Planning Office. Auto/transportation sales increased 8.3% over the same month last year, and lodging sales also saw a healthy increase of 3.5%. Business operating sales rose nearly 11%, while personal consumption sales inched up 1.4%. Not all categories saw increases: General merchandise sales dropped 3.6%, building supply sales slipped 2.3% and restaurant sales fell 1.6%.

Total sales for the last three months, December through February, are 3% higher than the same three-month period a year ago, according to the SPO.
