Machias Savings Bank announced a $10,000 donation to Mount Desert Island Hospital's Workforce Support Initiative, which comes on top of last year's initial $10,000 commitment.
The hospital launched the initiative to help support career development opportunities for staff members, including professional development and training programs to help improve staff retention, as well as to help support sign-on bonuses to improve recruitment efforts.
“Mount Desert Island Hospital is a vital resource for the MDI community - one that we’re pleased to be able to support,” said Matt Horton, vice president and branch manager at Machias Savings Bank. “The hospital has already demonstrated an incredible dedication to better serving the community and has impressive plans for expanding that support in the years to come.”
Machias Savings, led by President and CEO Larry Barker, was ranked No. 5 among Maine-based banks in the 2023 Mainebiz Book of Lists, based on assets as of June 30, 2022. Today, Machias Savings has nearly $2.3 billion in assets, 300 employees and 15 branches from Portland to Caribou.
Last year, Mount Desert Island Hospital was able to fill 74 key vacancies across all levels of the organization, as well as pioneering a Pathway to Employment program aimed at reducing the hospital’s reliance on temporary contract staff, through which the hospital successfully hired two full-time employees.
Ongoing community support will help the institution fill vacancies and add to staff as it plans for an expansion and renovation of essential areas of the hospital over the next five years.
“Machias Savings Bank’s generous gift made a transformational difference in the hospital’s ability to provide high-quality, compassionate health care to our community in 2022 through the retention and recruitment of top-quality staff,” said Chrissi Maguire, the hospital's president and CEO “Together, we are building a brighter, healthier tomorrow for our community.”
MDI Hospital, a nonprofit institution established in 1897, has grown into a premier rural healthcare organization with a retirement community and six primary care health centers, as well as a full-service behavioral health center and a dental clinic.
Today, the hospital employs more than 500 people and is MDI’s second-largest employer, according to its website. The medical staff includes hospitalists, primary care physicians and practitioners, highly skilled nurses, orthopedic surgeons, general surgeons, psychiatrists, care managers, a board-certified emergency physician, an ophthalmologist, a pathologist, a radiologist, a urologist and a urogynecologist.
