Maine Community Foundation CEO to retire

Henry "Hank" Schmelzer, the president and CEO of the Maine Community Foundation in Ellsworth and Mainebiz's 2007 "Business Leader of the Year," announced today he will retire at the end of 2008.

The search to find a successor for Schmelzer will begin "in the next couple of weeks," Carl Little, a MaineCF spokesperson, told Mainebiz this morning. A committee will be convened to conduct a nationwide search.

Since Schmelzer became the organization's leader in February 2000, MaineCF's assets have more than tripled from $78 million to $250 million, the number of donors has doubled, and grants have increased from $5 million to $16 million annually.

"He's stepping down at a time when we're in very good order," Little said. "We have a new strategic plan in place, this is our 25th year" and the foundation has a number of new efforts it plans to roll out in 2008.
