Maine Hospital Assoc. supports Medicaid expansion

The Maine Hospital Association on Wednesday expressed general support for expanding Medicaid in the state, which Gov. Paul LePage's administration has said it would consider only with certain concessions from the federal government.

Maine Today Media reported that the hospital organization says it's still evaluating the financial impact of expanding Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act but that it is generally supportive of the idea.

Under the ACA, the federal government would cover the full cost of expanding Medicaid for three years, with the federal coverage dropping to 90% in subsequent years. In a letter to federal officials last week, Maine Department of Health and Human Services Commissioner Mary Mayhew asked that Maine receive 10 years of full funding for the expansion.

Democrats in Augusta counted the statement from the hospital group as a win, as a Democrat-backed plan for expanding Medicaid in Maine will hear testimony Tuesday, including testimony from the hospital association.
